Drop-in card for Dell PowerEdge SC1430

I needed a video card with digital outs for a Dell PowerEdge SC1430 server and this fits the bill perfectly. Drops in with no mods or physical config and has both DVI and HDMI out. Uses standard ATI / Catalyst drivers. I used ATI's Vista 64-bit installer under Server 2008 and everything runs perfectly.

Pricey for what it is, but they don't sell too many of these. It's mostly for weird niche applications, like people who want to install a video card in their server.

Has nothing specific to do with this card, but watch out for the quirkiness of ATI's software. It was set to underscan by default, giving me black borders around the edges of the desktop. The underscan setting is buried several levels deep inside the Catalyst Control Panel and is hard to find unless you already know where it is.

Too noisy

Easy to install. Instantly recognized by machine. PCI Express x1 connectivity. Compatible with existing ATI Radeon HD 2600XT for quad monitor support. Card came with CD for install (of course), and the (re)load of the Catalyst software recognized all 3 monitors and TV.

Fan noise is intolerable. Returning item.

I bought this card to add hardware support for a third monitor and an HDTV in an existing dual monitor system. Since I only have one x16 slot on my machine, I was limited to x1 cards. The card works well and I had no problems with video control and functionality. Unfortunately, the fan constantly emits a high pitched whine (fan is always on), louder that a Comcast DVR's fan (for those that own one). The high pitch was the deal breaker. After 2 weeks, the sound has not faded into "background noise." Our office is attached to our master bedroom ad I can hear the fan from 22 feet away (bed), if the office doors are open, even though the computer is against a side wall and cabinet and not line of sight to the bed. Great product, especially for an x1, but the whine from the fan was just too much. I may bite the bullet and just buy a Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 X2, which is a single PCI e2 x16, but has two HD 4850s. (Dell XPS 420, Quad Core Q8600, 4gb RAM (well...3.4), Vista 32 bit)
