- Blazing fast read speeds
- Unbeatable for the price
- Write speeds inconsistent
- Converting to NVMe is not an easy process
The only thing keeping me from giving the drive 5 stars is the inconsistent write speeds. While the read speeds are always topping out at over 2,700 MB/s during testing the write speeds seem to bounce all over the place. I will see some results at 1,500 MB/s which is over the spec rate but have also seen results as low as 580 MB/s. I'm not sure why the write performance results change so dramatically but it is still always faster than SATA, so at least there is that.
Changing from SATA to NVMe is still a very awkward process. Even for people with years of experience with PC's, the process always seems to be hit or miss. In this instance, the cloned drive was not bootable and could not be repaired with the Windows boot manager. I had to format the drive with a Windows setup drive, cancel the Windows installation process and then restore a saved image of the previous drive. Although I was able to keep all of the information from the previous drive, Windows would not activate and would not even allow me to use the automated voice number to activate Windows. I was required to call into Microsoft and speak to a live person to get their assistance. Microsoft was able to activate Windows rather quickly once I had them on the phone but the wait was well over 30 minutes to get a representative. I think an easy process for migrating to NVMe needs to be developed. The way things are now it is very difficult for the average user to migrate to this technology.
If you aren't a benchmark junkie and don't mind spending a couple of hours getting things to work, this is the drive for you. I upgraded from a SATA SSD that was consistently performing in the high 500 MB/s range for both reads and writes and this drive is noticeably faster in day to day use. You don't need the benchmarks to feel the difference.
- Fast, low power, 1Tb capacity
- Fits Hades Canyon NUC
- Completely died after six months
- Total data loss
I'm used to Intel being synonymous with high quality parts, so I'm shocked this quit working after six months of light use in a Hades Canyon NUC. It was great while it lasted.
