Intel NUC Kit D34010WYK1, Mini HDMI, Mini DisplayPort, USB 3.0, 4th Gen Intel Core i3-4010U, Consumer Infrared sensor

Pros: I've now purchased 2 of these: one for myself (as a HTPC running XBMC and also just for lightweight computing) and one for my parents (as a full replacement for their primary desktop). These things are fantastic. Once you buy the RAM/mSATA storage, you can whip it together and install Win8 in under 20min.

The Intel VBIOS is one of the cleaner modern UEFI interfaces I've seen (unnecessary animations can be disabled). You need to spend some time tweaking the temp/cooling settings in BIOS if you want to truly minimize ambient noise, otherwise the fan kicks on a bit excessively.

Both the mini-DP and mini-HDMI ports support 1080p and digital audio, so you can easily hook up to any TV (dongles can be found for cheap on Amzn).

Power brick is slimmer than most laptop power bricks I've seen. No built-in battery backup tho, so make sure you use a UPS or otherwise risk data loss.

Cons: The price is high for the modest specs, you're definitely paying for convenience of compact form factor. Also, the price hasn't gone down in the last 1year that I've tracked it (in fact it's gone UP by a few bucks).

All the ports are USB 3.0. This is nice as a future-proof feature. However, there is a known and documented incompatibility with USB3.0 standard and USB wireless receivers operating at the 2.4ghz range. The Logitech wireless dongle that I use does not work when plugged directly into the USB3.0 port (at distances >1m, interferences from the USB3.0 port causes the wireless signal to be disrupted). Workaround is I have to plug the dongle into a USB ext cable. It works but is a bit messy, and I really wish the NUC had just *one* USB2.0 port so that I didn't have to deal with this workaround.

Haven't tried the built-in WiFi/Bluetooth antenna (separate card req'd). Also haven't tried the built-in IR receiver. So cannot comment on those features.

Pros: Great, small form factor system that works well. Small space. Light weight. There are many after-market cases available to convert this to a fanless system.

Cons: Mini HDMI/Display Port connectors are annoying.
Computer will not start without a monitor attached.

NOTE: Some monitors (like both of mine) must be POWERED ON to be detected. Also, the correct input must be selected on the monitor (HDMI/DisplayPort, etc). This means the computer may not boot at all unless the monitor is turned on first and input configured on at least one monitor. (-1 Egg for "bug")

Overall Review: Wish it had an SD card reader in the case.
Wish it was fanless.
There are mixed reviews saying that a BIOS update may or may not "help" with the monitor boot problem. My BIOS is from early 2014 and had the issue.
I would NOT recommend a NUC as a headless system in any circumstance (thus far Intel has chosen not to make such operation a supported configuration). (-1 Egg for ongoing support)
