This thing really has some power if you turn it up all the way. It replaced an old Sony powered subwoofer that I THOUGHT was really nice. One movie with this thing and I have a new appreciation for what a good subwoofer can contribute to a movie. This was the last piece to complete my Polk Audio speaker system and I'm glad I bought it.
I would guess 99% of the buyers will have a single subwoofer "output" on the back of their receiver. This unit has a left and right "input" and I had to buy a splitter separately to connect this up. It wasn't a big deal but something I had to do.
Unless you're trying to fill a huge room with bass I wouldn't bother with the 12" woofer that's twice the price. This one will do the job.
Provides LFE's at a slightly higher volume than floor-standing speakers. It sounds good at low volumes with movies only and adds a satisfying rumble to the room. It's really cheap (especially on sale) and is a fair addition to make your 5/7 into a 5.1/7.1.
When the volume goes up, the sound quality goes way down. I have my speakers pretty decently adjusted for not being a professional or a true audiophile, but this sub makes a really obvious and bad booming sound when it's turned up. This sub would not work well in larger rooms. It is no good for music. When I play music I turn it OFF. It's too loud at certain frequencies and barely audible at higher frequencies.
I almost feel bad giving this sub a bad review. Almost. I see an overwhelming number of raving reviews about this sub and I just don't get it. I have it next to 2 Monitor II 70's in the front, a CS10 center(also not a great speaker), monitor 30's for 2 surrounds and a middle of the road Onkyo receiver. This sub simply cannot hang when you turn the system up! My monitor 70's are fantastic and clear and LOUD at every volume I've pushed them to. The sub gets boomy and loses the actually sound that's intended by the audio track and just makes a general annoying rumble. It also is no good for music. I turn it off for music because the 70's sound better across all frequencies, even if it's not quite as loud at lower frequencies. This sub just DROPS out for anything higher than hip-hop type music. I don't understand why so many people have nothing bad to say about this sub. I say spend an extra $100 and get a BIC america F-12 or the Polk PSW505.
