Does a great job with no fan--as good as my Scythe 1000 with a 120mm on it. Runs at 88f to 92f, wether at idle, or running UT3. Balance is pretty decent too, as I don't see gravity pulling it down--it sits in there straight. The base has a perfect polish to it--perhaps nickel plated. Very efficient clip mounting system. It's solid, and one of the best I've seen--and it doesn't bend your mobo like the oem coolers.
It's about the size of Texas, so you better have a Texas sized case. I put mine in a 2002 Chieftec server case...the case side strut had to be cut out, and the PSU moved up a good half an inch to fit it. Your mounting choice is straight up, or sideways across your ram slots.
Good thing it works without the fan, as there's no place to put it. If you mount the cooler across your ram slots, big boys like Corsair Dominators with fans are out--which is why mine is mounted up. I really like this rig, and wanted to give it 5 Eggs, but since no one bothered to put any mounting screws in the kit, I had to go with 4 Eggs.
Large, clean and well polished base. This heat sink would have been the perfect silent cpu cooler for the Q9300 quad processor I selected for my new build. Unfortunatly...
I suppose I could have done some more homework on the board layout.
The motherboard (Intel DX38BT) does not have enough room around the CPU to fit the bracket for the heat sink. I went with the NOCTUA NH-U12P as a near silent alternative (reviewed recently on anandtech.com, but not available for purchase on newegg for some reason). The brackets have plenty of clearance to avoid touching the board components.
The case (Antec P182) has room for the heat sink but the motherboard (Intel DX38BT) did not.
Shopping for a 3rd party heat sink is difficult with different board designs, bracket layouts and mounting mechanisms. A tool that would check the measurements (or even point out what points to measure) would be helpful. I'm not aware of one now.
