Well, let me start off by saying that it’s fast. It really does exactly what it says on the packaging. In my tests, file writes hovered around 520 MB/s and reads came in just a bit higher at 536 MB/s. It’s worth noting that both Crystal DiskMark scores and monitoring a basic file move were nearly the same in terms of average read/write speeds. The drive is also very compact and lightweight and I suppose I would expect as much from a tiny SSD. I like the styling of the enclosure which easily slips into a pocket. Really pleased to see native USB C here with a dongle for standard (old school) USB 3.1 included. I think it’s really the direction we’re headed in the market any way.
Well, the list here isn’t very long. My main complaint is that the brushed nickel side of the enclosure is a fingerprint magnet. It looks pretty terrible mere minutes after it’s removed from the box. Maybe I have gross fingers? It’s really hard to tell. Anyway, be aware that it will attract all manner of fingerprints instantly.
The other big con with this drive is related to the bundle. Western Digital decided it would be alright to package a USB-C cable that’s literally three inches long. Seriously? I’m paying this much for a drive and they decide that a 3 inch cable is sufficient? I found that kind of annoying and certainly a bit cheaper that I would have expected from a drive this expensive. That being said, this little stump of a cable is made well and will probably get you by in a pinch.
I’m a sucker for activity lights and there isn’t one on this drive. Call me old fashioned, but sometimes I feel like it’s at least a small troubleshooting step that I really like to see.
I’m honestly really curious what’s inside the enclosure. If I manage to open it up I’ll spill the details here. This is definitely the ultimate portable drive if you need big speed and big space. It’s really a good middle ground if you’re really looking for something close to a flash drive in size but with bigger capacity.
It’s worth noting that I used an OCZ SSD packed with mkv files to perform big file tests. The OCZ drive has tested out at around 790 MB/s in read and write. This was to ensure I didn’t encounter a bottleneck with this drive during testing. Honestly, this little guy can outpace a lot of laptop SSDs even today so that’s pretty cool in my opinion.
EDIT: It's a standard PCI-e drive! Now I have an internal M Sata drive on my motherboard! That's a pretty cool setup. Also worth noting that the enclosure saps about 5% of the speed (pretty reasonable) versus pulling the drive out.
None, didn't work me
-Waste of time
-Non returnable
-Just a large USB stick
Updating and modernizing the Acronis software would help.
