I'm poor

Let me just preface this by saying......I'm poor.......really poor. When this came up around Christmas time for about $79.00 after rebate, I said "oh well so the kids miss a couple of meals. I couldn't pass up the chance to get into an x79 board for so little money. EVGA did send the rebate in a timely manner so I am very happy with the whole buying experience and am happy with the operation of this board. My hungry kids however are not.

My kids went hungry for a bit.

It's now late June and I finally scraped enough money together to go down to my local big brick and mortar, you know, the one that sells processors really cheap to bring you in the store. I bought my I7 3820 processor and ran out because I didn't want to get tempted to buy anything else because I had no extra money. I'm poor, I probably already mentioned that. Anyhow.....I'm in the x79 family and my kids didn't lose that much weight so it's all good.

Catastrophic Failure

Feature Set
Price/Feature
EVGA Support

The board catastrophically failed after 3 days, and under light use. One of the MOSFETS in the voltage regulation for the CPU was bad and it failed, making an audible sizzle, shooting sparks, smoking, and killing both the board and the processor.

As a much smaller issue the secondary timings on the XMP profiles seem to be off, requiring manual adjustment for RAM to be stable at its rated speed. (I wouldn't have knocked an egg for just this)

EVGA is a good company from my experience and QC issues happen. This is not my first product from them, but it is my first problem. They stepped up, and I got my replacement board and I'm waiting for the replacement processor to test it out. It is my honest hope to come back and write a 5-egg review for that replacement board. It is also my hope that this is rare enough to not affect their overall ratings much, but a board that practically catches on fire (and might have if I wasn't there to cut the power) gets 1 egg.
