I'd been waiting a long while for a cheaper eGPU solution ever since Alienware and Razer released their own eGPU enclosures. When I heard Power Color was developing their own box I was ecstatic, especially when I'd heard that it would work with most laptops that have a Thunderbolt 3 port.
Pros:
-Easily fit an EVGA GTX 1080 SC edition and had bough power pin connectors to plug into whatever you throw at it.
-External graphics work well despite slight performance loss
-Works with Thunderbolt 3 and not proprietary in any way
-Doesn't require Power Color graphic cards
-Has two bays for hard drives
-Has a few USB 3.0 ports that can be used for peripherals
So while the physical installation of the card was easy it took me a while to figure out how to properly use this thing. The manual isn't very helpful and neither is the site in regards to troubleshooting. When I got the card installed and hooked up the box to my computer it installed the necessary drivers and asked if I wanted to use the devil box, easy stuff. After the drivers installed though my computer instantly froze. I tried rebooting and it wouldn't load windows. Eventually I launched windows through safe mode, uninstalled all graphic drivers using Display Driver Uninstaller and reinstalled the graphics driver. Once I'd done that it worked fine and let me boot back into windows so I'm assuming there was some sort of driver issue going on there.
Also this box HAS to be set up to an external monitor as it won't just work with the laptop's screen, or at least mine didn't. In order to get my 1080 to run games I had to run them on my other monitor connected to the card inside the devil box. If you plan on just leaving the box next to a monitor this isn't a big issue but for those looking for portability you probably aren't going to find it here.
Despite the not-so-user-friendly install of this box I've thoroughly enjoyed the box so far. One last thing I feel I need to mention though is that you have to be careful on what's plugged into the USBs on the devil box. I had my keyboard and mouse hooked up and they would stop working off and on, I'm assuming due to too much power being used. Besides that though I recommend this box to anyone looking for desktop grade graphics with a compatible laptop.
- Easy install.
- Thumb screws on most of the unit.
- Accommodates basically all cards.
- Enough room for liquid cooling with some simple mods.
- More the enough power with 500W 80 Plus Gold rated PSU.
Works great. No software needed, just make sure your Thunderbolt 3 software is installed.
- It's BIG! like ITX case with full-size ATX PSU big.
- It's loud! The fans are the worst. 4-pin GPU connectors.
- No screws included for the proprietary 2.5" drive mount.
- Where's the SATA cable?
C'mon PowerColor, I just spent how much and you couldn't provide a simple SATA cable or extra screws for the drive mount?
The fans?!!! Are these the loudest you could find? They're not even standard 4/3-pin PWM. I HAVE to put this box within a foot of my system and listen to it. Where was R&D on this one?
This box is the most adaptable currently on the market and is still a good pick, BUT I recommend replacing the 120mm and 92mm 4-pin (GPU plug) fans. Since Thunderbolt 3 has a length restriction, you're gonna get tired of the small props trying to take off unless you invest ~$200 for Corning's fiber cable and relocate it. I feel as though PowerColor rushed this batch to the market and forgot some things along the way.
Replacing the fans, you'll like the following...
- Noctua NF-S12B redux-1200 PWM 120mm Fan
- Noctua NF-B9 redux-1600 PWM 92mm Fan
- 2x 3/4-Pin Fan Connector (Male) to 4-Pin GPU Mini Fan Connector (Female)
All items are available from Newegg and will cost you about $40. Well worth the money. Don't believe me, buy the unit and see for yourself. My review will be waiting here for your reference. You're welcome.
